"What is the Higgs?" by Nigel Holmes (10/8/13) is an interactive graphic used to introduce the viewer to the concept of the Higgs Boson and the Higgs Field. The graphic starts out by making a comparison between the Higgs Field and snow, and how that 'snow' allows certain people to cross easily while other people struggle to cut through all the snow. It is then illustrated how scientists managed to prove the existence of Higgs Bosons, which make up the Higgs Field.
Higgs Bosons are important to our world because they give all particles mass. Electrons are given very little mass, while protons and neutrons have more mass. Without mass, the sun would not stay within this galaxy, the earth would not stay around the sun, and we, along with all our possessions and other organisms, would not stay on the earth.
